KK Crushers: Vlad ‘Sarah.K’ Barbu

VLAD BARBU POKER

Consistency. Dedication. Growth. Success. These are some of the qualities that define KK Crushers, a brand-new initiative celebrating some of the most accomplished players in the KKPoker community!

KK Crushers shines a spotlight on players who have consistently performed at a high level while representing everything that makes the KKPoker community special. Beyond tournament results and nicknames, it’s an opportunity to discover the people behind the avatars and learn about their journeys, challenges, personalities and ambitions.

Following the announcement of our first KK Crusher, Tommy ‘JustX’ Savov, we are delighted to introduce the second member of the KK Crushers…

Vlad Sarah.K’ Barbu

Like ‘JUSTX’, if you regularly play tournaments on KKPoker, you may recognise the nickname ‘Sarah.K‘ battling deep into events and putting opponents under pressure.

But behind the nickname is Vlad Barbu, a 28-year-old professional poker player from Christchurch, New Zealand.

Born in Romania before moving at the age of eight, Vlad has built a reputation within the KKPoker community as a determined and fearless tournament player who thrives in high-pressure situations.

However, before becoming known online as ‘Sarah.K’, his poker journey started much closer to home.

From Watching to Falling in Love With Poker

Vlad’s introduction to poker came through his Father. As a child, he watched him play online and became curious about the game.

“I asked what this ‘game’ was, and ever since then I loved the maths and statistics side of poker regarding outs, equity and everything involved.” said Vlad.

That analytical approach has remained a major part of Vlad’s poker identity.

His love for numbers, probabilities and decision-making naturally drew him deeper into the game, eventually transforming poker from a hobby into a serious pursuit.

The Moment Poker Became Serious

For Vlad, the turning point came during a local casino promotion. While playing cash games, he entered a promotion where players could win free seats into upcoming tournaments, much like the KKPoker promotions and live poker satellites.

Well, on that day, luck was on his side.

Vlad won a NZ$3,000 Main Event seat and turned the opportunity into an incredible result, finishing runner-up and significantly boosting his bankroll.

From there, he gradually increased his volume and committed more time to the game.

It’s very easy to keep doing something you enjoy a lot.” Vlad added.

That enjoyment helped him transition from casual player to full-time poker professional.

Learning From the Challenges

Like most curious poker players, Vlad’s journey has included plenty of lessons away from the results. One of his biggest early challenges was something many players can relate to, overthinking every decision.

I used to be insufferable with tanking every single decision because I wanted to make sure I made the correct play.”

His long decision times even drew complaints from players at the table. Looking back, Vlad admits they probably had a point.

I would’ve complained to myself too, so they were definitely in the right.”

Those experiences helped him develop a better understanding of balancing preparation with confidence.

Although he has taken breaks from poker during difficult periods, he has never truly considered walking away. When confidence starts to dip, Vlad returns to previous hands and reviews his decisions.

Seeing that he made the correct play, even if the result went against him, helps him stay motivated.

Becoming ‘Sarah.K’ and Joining KKPoker

Long before becoming recognised throughout the KKPoker community, Vlad needed to find the perfect online nickname.

The inspiration came from an unlikely source.

Sarah.K is a player at a local cash game in New Zealand. She was running ridiculously good over a span of a few months, winning every pot, hitting every draw, 2 outers, 1 outers etc.” said Vlad.

So, Vlad decided there was only one logical solution.

If I make my name her name, maybe I’ll also run ridiculously good.” He joked.

The plan worked. The nickname became a familiar sight at the tables since Vlad joined KKPoker in August 2021 after several friends recommended joining the community.

His proudest KKPoker achievement so far came when he won both Sunday GLORY tournaments on the same day! A remarkable accomplishment that remains one of his favourite online poker memories.

It feels pretty cool to know I had such an impact on the community. I never would’ve imagined it.”

A Player Who Puts Opponents Under Pressure

When describing his poker style, Vlad’s approach is clear. He enjoys making opponents uncomfortable.

What separates great tournament players is putting other players in the blender.”

Vlad believes the ability to apply pressure and force difficult decisions is one of the biggest differences between average and elite poker players. His own strengths reflect that mindset.

I’m not afraid to fire a bluff if needed and be okay regardless of the outcome.”

That fearless approach has helped him achieve success, although he also recognises the need to learn from mistakes and is currently working to improve his shorter-stack tournament play.

Big Live Poker Moments

Away from KKPoker, Vlad has also created memorable moments on the live felt.

During a trip to Sydney for the APL in January 2026, he reached the final table of the A$460 Big Bounty Hunter event.

Facing a highly aggressive French opponent who was chip leader, Vlad found himself involved in a crucial hand.

After calling a flop check-raise, Vlad improved to a full house on the river and doubled up after his opponent moved all-in with a bluff.

With a growing stack, Vlad used the momentum to apply pressure throughout the final table.

Eventually, he emerged victorious.

Life Beyond The Tables

Away from poker, Vlad focuses heavily on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

He trains in the gym five days a week, competing in powerlifting and using fitness as a way to stay balanced away from the pressure of poker.

Whether playing a 12-hour live tournament, grinding multiple online tables or sitting in a long cash game session, Vlad believes physical and mental preparation are essential.

I focus on eating well, training well and being in good shape to handle the very long hours that poker can bring.”

Outside the gym, Vlad also enjoys chess, having competed during high school, and continues to play online today.

Also he has a desire to travel more, with Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam all high on his list of future destinations.

What Has Poker Taught Vlad?

For Vlad, poker has provided lessons that extend far beyond the tables. One of the biggest is understanding the difference between decisions and results.

You can make the right decision and still get a bad result, or make a poor decision and get rewarded. That’s part of the game.

Learning to accept that difference has helped Vlad become more disciplined, patient and focused on the things within his control.

Looking to the future, like many tournament players, Vlad is chasing one major goal. That one big tournament victory.

The only thing to be done is continue the grind. It’s a long journey.”

Away from poker, he continues to focus on personal development, fitness and exploring new opportunities.

And as his KKPoker journey continues, he hopes to keep building connections within the community.

Becoming a KK Crusher is a great opportunity for me to share my experiences and connect with like-minded others.”

Advice For The KKPoker Community

For aspiring tournament players, Vlad believes small details can make a huge difference.

Don’t hold back on making notes and labelling your opponents based on their tendencies. One small note you made a few weeks ago could help you massively in a tough spot.”

That attention to detail perfectly represents Vlad’s approach to poker.

Analytical. Driven. Relentless.

Three qualities that explain exactly why Vlad ‘Sarah.K’ Barbu has become the second official KK Crusher.

His story proves that success in poker isn’t only about winning the biggest tournaments. It’s about making better decisions, learning from every experience and continuing to push forward.

And perhaps one day, your own journey could earn you the title of KK Crusher.
